REGE 24 MAY 16
Sir:-
Ex Grey to
I am directed by Secretary Sir EyGrey to acknowledge the receipt of your letter 20504 of
the 11th instant regarding the dispute between
China and Portugal concerning Jurisdiction over
certain islands in the neighbourhood of Macao.
His Majesty's Minister at Peking has, for
the past year, been awaiting an opportunity of
intervening in this dispute with a view to
bringing about a settlement between the parties
concerned and the Secretary of State would
prefer, before embarking on representations at Lisbon, to ascertain from Sir J. Jordan what
prospects there are of a local settlement and
whether any useful result might be expected to
accrue from representations to the Portuguese
Government.
I am to enclose herewith, for the information
of Mr. Bonar Law, copy of a despatch which is
being addressed to Peking on this subject.
I am,
Sir,
Your most obedient,
humble Servant,
Whanden
he Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
